Raping justice
I should be writing about how much I enjoyed episode two of “Eastwick.” Instead, my mind is occupied with real evil.
Liberals often ask how someone like George W Bush can get elected, and how other Americans can be so ignorant, meaning not liberal. They bring it on themselves.
Some of my views could be rated left-of-center by those who do that sort of pigeonholing. I like freedom, which makes me Libertarian. But while I lean towards permitting abortions during the early stages of pregnancy, for instance, many liberals insist on late-term abortions.
When some crackpot shot Dr George Tiller, who grew rich performing abortions through the ninth month, liberals made him a martyr, blaming those who reported on his activities for inciting violence.
Now they are lining up to defend fugitive convicted-rapist Roman Polanski. Sometimes there is a question of the trial’s fairness, particularly in the case of poor defendants. Not here. The standard being applied seems to be that Polanski is a cool director, an artist, so his crime should be excused.
Fellow directors Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Michael Mann and Mike Nichols are urging California to drop its extradition efforts. Woody Allen signed on although, oddly, not his ex-lover Mia Farrow, who starred in “Rosemary’s Baby.” Most shocking is Whoopi Goldberg saying the director (Polanski) didn’t commit “rape rape,” by which she seemed to be suggesting that statutory rape isn’t real rape. It was real rape, but he pled it down to the lesser charge of sex with a minor because the prosecution wanted to spare the victim from a traumatic trial.
Harvey Weinstein, who should stick to producing, wrote, “Whatever you think about the so-called crime, Polanski has served his time. A deal was made with the judge, and the deal is not being honored.” He goes on to say the government is acting “irresponsibly and criminally.” Rape not a crime? I must have missed that memo. I thought they’d legalise weed first.
Entertainment writer Pat Goldstein says it’s a waste of California’s tax dollars. Liberals hate government waste. Where was his outrage at money being spent to save some slug or other, to protect the environment, rather than protecting humans?
One of few Hollywood guys supporting extradition is producer Bo Zenga, who said, “I don’t actually believe that people in Hollywood would put protecting their own above a 13-year-old girl who was raped.” Believe it, Bo. This is the town where a person can grow wealthy making documentaries about how much he hates capitalism.
You can read the Grand Jury transcripts, if you think Polanski deserves a pass, but there is no question it was real rape. A 44-year old man drugged (quaalude) and forced alcohol (champagne) on a 13-year old girl. Still, she was coherent enough to beg him to stop, as he anally raped her twice. She was “afraid” during the crime, necessitating years of recovery time.
The rapist is not the victim.
Some of his defenders say that Polanski had a terrible early life, so he was afraid of going to prison. Fair enough. I am afraid of going to prison. One way I avoid that outcome is by not raping anyone. It’s not that complicated.
Supporting a rapist is the same as endorsing rape.
[Not all liberals are nuts, just pro-rape liberals.]
